IPAC Chair Urges Opposition to Participate in Abia LG Elections

Addressing concerns about their participation in the November 2, 2024, Local Government Council elections announced by the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Mr. Chimezie Uluocha, State Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), urged opposition parties to take part for the sake of grassroots democracy and the state’s interests.

In an interview with reporters in Umuahia over the, Uluocha defended the November 2 date set by ABSIEC for the elections, despite objections from several political parties who argued it didn’t allow sufficient time for preparation.

He asserted that no other date would have been more suitable than the one announced by ABSIEC.

He said, “The Federal Government has set a deadline for states to hold their Local Government Council elections by the end of December 2024. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the cessation of monthly federal allocations to Local Government Areas under the transitional arrangement.

He stated that, despite their membership in different political parties, everyone's primary concern should be ensuring the state conducts a credible and participatory election.

However, after the PDP announced its readiness to fully participate in the local government elections, the caretaker committee in Abia State alleges that political opponents are attempting to blackmail them to create panic among their members.

According to Jude Ndukwe, Media Adviser to Abia PDP Caretaker Committee, he stated “Since the PDP announced its readiness to participate fully in the elections, those scared of its resilience and sustained popularity among the people have been making attempts to disparage the election process and vainly making efforts to discourage PDP members from participating in it by claiming that there was no way the party in power in the state would allow a free and fair election that would make members of other parties emerge either as chairmen or councillors”

Recall that ABSIEC Chairman Prof. George Chima, during the announcement of the Local Government Council Election schedule, stated that the commission would not change the November 2 date, emphasizing that there is still ample time for parties to prepare for the election.

The chairman stated that political parties are expected to conduct their primaries for chairmanships and councilorships by October 2, 2024, according to the timetable.
