IPAC Express Satisfaction with Abia LG Elections

Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Abia State chapter, have expressed their satisfaction with the results of the Local Government election held on November 2, organized by the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).

IPAC's stance was revealed on Saturday in Umuahia during a post-election briefing by the chairmen of various political parties in Abia State.

Nelson Uluocha, the Abia State Chairman of IPAC, and Joseph Ulu, the council's publicity secretary, stated that IPAC has clarified that no official grievances have been submitted to the council. They stated that they have not received any formal complaints from party chairmen about the results of the local government elections,

Uluocha emphasized that some candidates had not followed the correct procedures before making unwarranted claims to the press, raising concerns about their approach. He expressed confusion over why these candidates were quickly going to the press, alleging that ABSIEC was withholding the certified true copy of the results.

He clarified that any individual seeking access to the certified true copy of the results could simply submit a request through their political party, and they would be granted the necessary access.

He cautioned against using media outbursts, stressing that such actions could destabilize the political climate in Abia and undermine the process. Uluocha, joined by other party chairmen, urged candidates unhappy with the results to consult their party leaders and follow the correct procedures for filing complaints.

The YPP State Chairman also urged the newly elected local government chairmen and councillors to avoid sidelining those who lost in the election, encouraging them to ensure inclusive governance.

Uluocha who is also the State Chairman of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), stated that a review conducted by IPAC of the November 2 elections confirmed the process was credible and free from manipulation in favor of any political party.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining order and respecting the election outcomes for the stability of the state. He reminded all parties that a peace accord had been signed before the election, with a commitment to a peaceful process and acceptance of the results, given ABSIEC's preparedness.

He noted, "On this table today, we have both the winners and the losers. The spirit of sportsmanship is key to the sustenance of democracy".

He continued, "As state chairmen of political parties, we are here to reaffirm our commitment to the election results and to work towards doing even better in the future".

He pointed out that the local government election was the first to be held without any rancor, violence, or malpractice. He called it a significant achievement, highlighting the peaceful and transparent nature of the election.

This, he noted, was a welcome departure from previous elections, which had been plagued by violence, malpractice, and other issues.

“Imagine where the Governor’s party did not win. That is to tell you his non-interference in the activities of this election,” Uluocha noted.
