Just IN: Delta Boat Collision Claims 5 Lives, 20 Missing

A heartbreaking boat accident in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, has claimed the lives of at least five people, with 20 others reported missing. The incident, confirmed by the Delta State Police Command, occurred when two speedboats collided, sending passengers, many of whom lacked life jackets, into the turbulent waters.

Delta State Police spokesman, Edafe Bright, disclosed that six injured victims are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Warri. The victims were reportedly returning from a family burial ceremony when the tragedy struck. Witness accounts suggest that the collision, coupled with the absence of safety gear, contributed significantly to the high casualty rate.

“The accident is under investigation, but preliminary findings indicate that many passengers were not wearing life jackets, which could have saved lives,” Edafe said.

This devastating accident has brought renewed attention to the recurring issue of unsafe water transport in Nigeria. Just last month, a similar incident in Niger State resulted in the deaths of scores of passengers when a boat overloaded with more than 300 people capsized in the Gbajibo River. That boat was en route from Mundi to Gbajibo for the annual Maulud celebration.

Despite being a vital mode of transportation for many riverine communities, Nigeria’s waterways are often plagued by inadequate safety measures, poor enforcement of regulations, and overcrowding. Experts have repeatedly called for stricter safety protocols, including mandatory use of life jackets and routine maintenance of boats, to curb the frequency of such disasters.

In Warri, grieving families are now searching for loved ones, while emergency response teams continue their search for the missing passengers. Community leaders have expressed frustration over the recurring nature of such tragedies, urging the government to take decisive action to improve water transportation safety.

“This is yet another avoidable tragedy that underscores the urgent need for better regulation and safety measures on our waterways,” a local chief lamented.
