The Federal Government has extended its condolences to the government and people of Niger State following a tragic petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area on Saturday.

In a statement released on Sunday, January 19th 2024, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nantewe Yilwatda, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which claimed numerous lives and caused extensive damage to property. Rhoda Iliya, the ministry’s Information Officer, issued the statement on behalf of the minister in Abuja.

Describing the explosion as a “heartbreaking tragedy,” Prof. Yilwatda highlighted the growing concern over the frequency of tanker explosions across the country. He warned motorists against reckless driving and emphasized the importance of adhering to road traffic regulations to prevent such devastating incidents.

“I am deeply saddened by the frequent occurrence of tanker explosions in the country, which often lead to loss of lives, injuries, and destruction of property. My thoughts are with the affected community, particularly those who have lost loved ones in this catastrophic event,” Prof. Yilwatda said.

The minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.

He praised Niger State Governor Umaru Bago and his team, including the State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Fire Service, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for their prompt response to the disaster. Prof. Yilwatda also commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and compassionate citizens who worked together to evacuate victims and provide assistance at the scene.

The Director-General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed that the explosion resulted in 86 deaths. Of these, 80 victims were buried in a mass grave, while the bodies of others were handed over to their families for private burial.

Additionally, 55 individuals sustained injuries in the incident, with one person later succumbing to their injuries at the healthcare facility in Dikko.

As the nation mourns this tragic loss, the minister urged Nigerians to prioritize safety on the roads and avoid behaviors that could put lives at risk.
