The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, along with his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Diri, and Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, participated in the 2024 annual adult harvest thanksgiving service at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Sampou, in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area , Bayelsa State.
The event, themed “Honour the Lord with Thy Substance,” brought together prominent government officials and community leaders who joined in the spirit of thanksgiving and celebration.
In his address, Governor Diri called on Bayelsans to embrace love, unity, and mutual support while shunning bitterness and divisiveness. He emphasized that fostering a harmonious environment is essential for the progress and prosperity of the state.
“I appreciate everyone who has come to honor God and, by extension, those of us from this community,” the governor remarked. “I urge every Bayelsan to continue to be brotherly and exude love because hatred has no place in our state. On behalf of the prosperity government, I thank you for your unwavering support.”
The thanksgiving service was graced by an array of distinguished personalities, including Senator Konbowei Friday Benson, representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District; Hon. Oboku Oforji, member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency; and Rt. Hon. Edwin Monday Bubou Obolo, Leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
Other notable attendees included members of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Solomon Agwana, Chairman of the People's Democratic Party (Bayelsa State Chapter), and Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, Secretary to the State Government.
The occasion also saw the presence of Barr. Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, Head of Service of Bayelsa State; HRM King Onya Mozi Agara, Ibedaowei of Kolokuma Kingdom; HRH Famous Usukoromogha, Amananaowei of Sampou Community; local government chairpersons; and several members of the state executive council.
The service emphasised the importance of community solidarity and spiritual reflection as key components of societal development.
Governor Diri's call for unity resonated deeply with the congregation, reaffirming his administration's commitment to fostering peace and progress across Bayelsa State.
Meanwhile, the Governor, earlier, accompanied by top government officials, visited his hometown, Sampou in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, to sympathize with residents affected by the devastating flood that has displaced everyone from their homes.
Sampou is one of the hardest-hit communities in the state, with every house, including the governor’s, completely submerged.
