The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reinstated the security details of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed this during a press briefing on Thursday evening. Earlier that day, security escorts assigned to the Speaker’s office and residence had been withdrawn, sparking widespread speculation.
The incident gained attention, particularly as the security aides of the impeached Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, were reinstated. Following this, Obasa reportedly stormed the assembly complex, declared himself Speaker, and presided over a plenary session attended by a small number of lawmakers.
Addressing the situation, Commissioner Jimoh clarified that four security officers assigned to Speaker Meranda had been restored. He explained that the withdrawal of security details for the Speaker and other high-profile individuals was part of an ongoing audit of police personnel and firearms.
He further emphasized that the audit is a nationwide exercise, affecting police commands in multiple states, not just Lagos.
