20 Lives Lost as Market Boat Explodes In Bayelsa River

A devastating boat explosion occurred on Wednesday evening in the Ezetu 1 Community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area od Bayelsa State, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people.

The wooden market boat, known locally as the 'Denghe' boat, was traveling from Ekeni Community to Yenagoa, the state capital, when its engine exploded in the middle of the river, causing the boat to sink.

ASP Musa Muhammad, Public Relations Officer for the Bayelsa State Police, confirmed the incident and stated that a rescue team has been deployed to search for and recover the bodies of passengers who drowned, as well as any goods. Efforts are being made to identify the victims.

The chairperson of the Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities of Nigeria in Bayelsa State, Comrade Odede Dinikpete Tina, described the incident as unfortunate, sad and attributed the casualties to the failure of boat operators and users to follow safety protocols, guiding the waterways including wearing life jackets. She appealed to the Bayelsa State Government to make coastal areas motorable to prevent such tragedies.

The Maritime Workers Union, Bayelsa State, has corroborated the tragic incident, revealing that the boat was en route to Okubie Community when the catastrophic explosion occurred, claiming the lives of numerous passengers. Unfortunately, rescue efforts were severely impeded by the absence of network coverage in the area, further exacerbating the crisis.

As search operations continue, the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, leaving families and loved ones in a state of anguish and uncertainty. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative need to prioritize safety measures in water transportation, to prevent such devastating losses of life and property.

The union's confirmation underscores the severity of the incident and highlights the need for urgent attention to be focused on enhancing safety protocols, including regular maintenance of vessels, provision of life-saving equipment, and adherence to safety guidelines. By learning from this tragedy, stakeholders can work towards ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future, safeguarding the lives of passengers and crew who rely on water transportation in the region.
