Just In: South-South Leader, Edwin Clark, Passes Away at 97

The nation mourns the loss of a towering figure in Nigerian politics, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South leader, who passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025. He was 97 years old.

According to a statement released by the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, "The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday 17th February, 2025."

Born in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Clark was a key figure in Nigeria's political landscape for over five decades. He played a vital role in shaping the socio-political development of the South-South region and advocating for the rights and interests of the Niger Delta people. Clark was the founding chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), a group that championed the cause of the oil-producing Niger Delta communities.

Chief Clark's educational journey began in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene, before proceeding to the Government Teacher Training College, which later became Delta State University, Abraka. His pursuit of knowledge led him abroad, where he earned a law degree, marking the beginning of a remarkable career in public service.

His career took off in 1966 when he served as a member of an advisory committee to the military governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor. From there, Clark rose through the ranks of government, becoming a key player in the administration of General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria's head of state from 1966 to 1975. His appointment as Federal Commissioner of Information in 1975 solidified his place as one of Nigeria's most influential political figures.

Clark's legacy as a fierce advocate for the Niger Delta and a champion of regional development will be remembered for generations. His contributions to Nigeria’s political evolution remain invaluable.
