Kano Government Supports Fire Victims With N28.4m

The Kano State Government has announced the distribution of N28.4 million in financial support to 62 individuals affected by recent fire disasters in the state.

This initiative was disclosed by Governor Abba Yusuf during a formal ceremony in Kano, where cash was allocated to support those impacted by the tragic incidents.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Abdullahi, who represented the governor, emphasized that the distribution was part of the state government’s intervention to provide relief and support for affected citizens. “We are here to console and support the victims and to help ease their pains with this token,” she stated.

Alhaji Isyaku Kubarachi, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, reported that the victims suffered property losses valued at approximately N835.9 million. He further noted that seven individuals lost their lives in the disaster, and 11 victims from the Dakata small-scale community were among the beneficiaries of the support.

“We conducted an assessment to determine the extent of damage and submitted a comprehensive report to the state government for assistance,” Kubarachi said.

He extended appreciation to Governor Yusuf, the Nigeria Red Cross, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs, as well as other stakeholders for their continued support.

NEMA’s Coordinator for the Kano Territorial Office, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, called on the public, particularly those using firewood and charcoal, to exercise caution when handling fire. He advised residents to always turn off electrical appliances before leaving their homes or going to bed to prevent potential fires.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ahmadu Sale from Tudun Wada in Nassarawa Local Government expressed gratitude to the state government for the support. He recounted his own personal tragedy, sharing that his son, daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren had tragically lost their lives in an electrical fire earlier in 2024.
