Aguocha Meets Nnamdi Kanu In DSS Custody

Hon. Obi Aguocha, lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia in Abia State, has visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and one of his constituents.

In a Friday statement from his media team, Aguocha shared that he met with Kanu on Thursday, October 24, 2024, alongside a member of the IPOB leader’s immediate family.

The visit followed reports that Nnamdi Kanu had been isolated from his lawyers, sparking concerns about his actual health condition.

After formally appealing to the House leadership and the DSS, the lawmaker was granted permission to visit Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained by the DSS since 2021. An agreement was also reached to allow his lawyers access to him.

The statement reads, “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is keeping well and looks strong. Hon. Aguocha appreciates the commendable efforts of the new leadership of the DSS in ensuring that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s healthcare needs are met, including the approval of his request for access and attention to private medical care and to a doctor of his choice, to which Hon. Obi Aguocha is pleased to confirm that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has received private medical attention as recent as the 3rd of October, 2024.”

“Furthermore, a resolution was reached regarding the lack of access to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by his legal team, who hereby are granted the requisite access to their client”, the statement added.

Recall that Kanu’s legal team has severally accused the DSS of not allowing its members to have access to the IPOB leader who has been standing trial on a seven-count charge bordering on treasonable felony.

However, last Friday, a federal high court in Abuja warned Adeola Ajayi, the director-general (DG) of the Department of State Services (DSS), against disobeying court-ordered visitation for Nnamdi Kanu.

The court had ordered the DSS to always grant Kanu access to his lawyers, not exceeding five persons on every visiting day.
