Kano Governor Urges Doctors To Suspend Strike

The Kano State government under the leadership of Governor, Abba Yusuf, have called on the Nigerian Medical Association to call off its strike action, following reasons that their action could endanger the lives of over 20 million Kano residents who depend solely on medical services.

Governor Yusuf who made this known to the public on Thursday, the 8th of November 2024, assured the NMA that the report from the investigative panel looking into the alleged assault of a female doctor by the state’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital is on his desk, and that the right actions will be taken to bring the culprit to book.

This is as a result of the 48-hour ultimatum given by NMA to the state government to dismiss the commissioner, threatening to go on strike if their demands are not attended to.

Responding to the issue during a joint live broadcast with some journalists, Yusuf expressed disappointment over the NMA’s decision to strike over what he likened to be be "fight between two adults" while encouraging the association to allow due process to take effect in it's process.

“I am aware of many instances where planned industrial actions by the NMA were shelved due to the mutual respect and good relationship between the doctors and the Kano State government. The NMA knows that this government values the welfare of doctors,” the governor stated.

Yusuf stated that when he learnt about the incident, he promptly set up and commissioned a committee to investigate and instructed them to do a submition of the report from their findings in the space of 48 hours.

“As I speak, the report is already on my table, and I will act on it immediately"

“But if they now feel no one can talk to them, and their only next action is a strike, they should consider the lives of 20 million residents who could be put at risk over a disagreement between two individuals,” he said.

Speaking further, Governor Yusuf apologized on behalf of the government, as he also appealed to the striking doctors to have a consideration of the impact the strike will have on vulnerable patients, including pregnant women awaiting delivery, telling them to call off the strike in the interest of public health.

The governor also assured that any official found wanting in the incident would face appropriate sanctions, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to accountability and fair representation at all levels.
