Baby Factory Operator Taken into Custody by NSCDC in Abia

The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has detained 64-year-old Mr. Nnanna Michael, a native of Obinkita Arochukwu, in connection with operating baby factories and child trafficking.


The State Commandant, Usman Ishaq Alfadarai who revealed this, while parading the suspect said acting on credible intelligence received on Saturday, an operation at Michael’s residence on Abanafo Street, Ariaria, resulted in the rescue of two women namely, Doris Nelson, 23, from Gombe State, and Ugochukwu Winner, 21, from Isinweke, Ihitte Uboma in Imo State.


Alfadarai further explained that Nelson, who gave birth on Monday, September 9, 2024, sold her baby to an unidentified buyer the next day.


Meanwhile, Winner, who is seven months pregnant, was found to be in similar circumstances and being held under incomparable conditions.


He also said Michael, the suspect and a father of four and a former worker at a motherless home, confessed to the crime.


"Michael, a father of four and a former worker at a motherless home, confessed to harboring pregnant women, caring for them until they gave birth, and then selling their babies", he added


"the suspect revealed that Doris Nelson was introduced to him by a contact named Miracle from Abuja, who brought her to his Aba residence. After Doris gave birth to a baby girl, Michael sold the infant for N1.1 million. He had promised Doris N500,000, of which she had already received N100,000."


Additional report showed that Evangelist First Samuel, a resident of Aba who is now missing, introduced Winner to Michael. According to their arrangement, Michael was supposed to buy the baby after it was born and then sell it to interested buyers."


Alfaradai was quoted as saying, "Michael has been engaged in this illegal activity for a significant period. He utilized his connections from his previous employment at a motherless home to facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers. Michael admitted to selling one baby last year and two babies this year before his arrest."


Miss Doris Nelson, 23, from Gombe State, who works as a baker in Abuja, explained, “During my pregnancy, I was directed to Aba by someone.” She also mentioned that her parents were unaware of her pregnancy.


Meanwhile, Miss Ugochukwu Winner, 21, from Isinweke, Ihitte Uboma in Imo State, residing at Ariaria Junction, Aba, said that the mother of her classmate had connected her with the suspect.


All the suspects have expressed regret over their involvement.


Michael Nnanna, a pool agent, confessed to the crime, saying, “I was providing shelter for some girls at my home for their well-being, and one of them was pregnant. My intention was to sell the baby after birth. I deeply regret my actions now and recognize that what I did was both wrong and unethical.”


All the suspects have shown remorse for their actions and have acknowledged their involvement and expressed regret, recognizing the gravity of their offenses and the harm caused.

Alfaradai further stated that the NSCDC Abia State Command is dedicated to identifying everyone involved in this organized operation.


"We will persist in tracking down Mr. Michael's accomplices, remaining steadfast in our commitment to bringing all those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice and eradicating such practices.", Alfaradai assured.


He urged the people of Abia to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their areas, emphasizing the importance of providing credible intelligence to assist in maintaining security.
