Kano Govt Donates N100m to Textile Market Fire Victims

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has provided significant financial support to victims of the recent fire at Kantin Kwari Textile Market, donating N100 million to aid in their recovery.

The governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Tofa, revealed in a statement that Yusuf announced the donation during a sympathy visit to the traders at the market on Thursday.

The governor clarified that the N100 million donation wasn't meant to fully compensate for the losses suffered by the textile market fire victims, but rather to alleviate the immediate effects of the disaster.

“The donation is not meant to compensate you, but to support the affected traders and alleviate their suffering,” Yusuf was quoted as saying in the statement.

During the visit, Yusuf pledged to improve the market conditions by installing solar lights, rehabilitating the road network, constructing drainages, and providing motorised boreholes, among other measures.

He reassured the traders of the state government’s commitment to maintaining Kano’s status as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria and surrounding West African countries.

Meanwhile, The Managing Director of the Kantin Kwari Market Management Board, Hamisu Nama, informed the governor that 29 shops were burnt by the fire.

He, however, expressed gratitude to firefighters and good Samaritans for their quick intervention.

Similarly, The Chairman of the Market Elders Committee, Sabu’u Bako, thanked the governor for his concern and requested assistance in resolving ongoing operational issues affecting the market.

In a similar development , The League of Northern Democrats on Wednesday donated the sum of N50m to victims of the recent flooding, which submerged Maiduguri and its environs.

Ibrahim Shekarau,The chairman of the group, who was also a former governor of Kano State, announced the donation during a sympathy visit to Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.

At the event, Shekarau, said the group was aware of the extent of damage the flooding had caused on the people of the state as well as on critical infrastructures.

In his words, “We are here to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of Borno State in the aftermath of the devastating flood that has brought untold hardship to our brothers and sisters in Maiduguri and its environs.

"The loss of lives, destruction of homes, and the outbreak of diseases that have followed in the wake of this disaster are a great tragedy that has touched us all.
