Kano State Launches Safe School Coordinating Centre

In a decisive move to protect its education sector from the rising tide of violence, the Kano State Government has announced the creation of a Safe School Coordinating Centre at the state headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

This high-profile initiative, unveiled during a sensitisation programme on Tuesday themed “Understanding the Basis of School Security,” aims to fortify schools across the state against the looming threats of insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry.

During the event, Umar Haruna Doguwa, the Commissioner for Education, praised the NSCDC for spearheading efforts to safeguard students and school property. “The Civil Defence’s dedication to this project is invaluable. It will reshape the security landscape in and around our schools, creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning,” Doguwa said.

He further highlighted that the partnership between security agencies and the state government has been instrumental in maintaining peace, making Kano a safer state for education.

Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Major General M.I. Idris (retd.), the Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, stressed that the government would leave no room for insecurity to disrupt education. “We are committed to collaborating with security forces to guarantee the safety of our students, teachers, and school facilities,” Yusuf assured, hailing the NSCDC’s critical role in Kano’s security framework.

In his remarks, NSCDC Commandant Mohammed Falala underscored the urgent need for the Safe Schools Project, describing it as a lifeline for educational institutions under threat. “With schools increasingly becoming targets for insurgents and kidnappers, this initiative is not just timely—it is essential,” Falala declared.

The Safe Schools Project, Falala added, would serve as a security shield for both public and private institutions, thanks to the unyielding support of the Kano State Government.

Experts from top security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Police Force, and Department of State Services, delivered presentations, stressing the importance of proactive security measures.

A keynote presentation by Commander Hameed Abodunrin, PhD, from the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC), outlined the centre’s mission to tackle insecurity and protect schools nationwide.

The event, attended by over 250 stakeholders, including teachers, students, traditional rulers, and principals, reflected a united front in the fight against school insecurity. Also in attendance were NSCDC officials, divisional officers, area commanders, and Safe School Desk Officers, reinforcing the seriousness of the mission.

This initiative is not just a project—it is a call to action. Kano State has made it clear: education will not be derailed by fear, and students will be protected at all costs.
