Labour's Amesbury Suspended After Alleged Physical Assault

Britain’s Labour Party has suspended Member of Parliament Mike Amesbury following the release of a footage that allegedly shows him physically assaulting a man. The video, published Online, depicts the 55-year-old parliament member repeatedly punching a man to the ground and continuing the attack while onlookers shout for him to stop.

The Labour Party announced Amesbury’s suspension late on Sunday, stating it will be in effect "pending an investigation." Amesbury represents a parliamentary seat in northwest England and had recently been seen in Frodsham, where the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday.

Cheshire Police have confirmed they are investigating the matter. A 55-year-old man, who is believed to be Amesbury, was interviewed voluntarily under caution. Police were called to Frodsham after receiving reports of an assault and have since launched "further inquiries" into the situation.

A spokesperson for the Labour Party, which came into power in July, stated that Amesbury has been cooperating with the police investigation. However, in light of the ongoing inquiries, the party decided to administratively suspend his membership pending further developments.

In his own statement, Amesbury admitted to being involved in the incident but claimed he acted in self-defense after feeling threatened. He noted that the altercation occurred after an evening out with friends. “I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened,” he said, adding that he will not be making further public comments on the matter.

Amesbury expressed his commitment to remaining "an open and accessible MP" for his community despite the allegations and promised full cooperation with any investigations.

The incident adds to Amesbury’s recent history of security concerns. In July of last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham. Prosecutors at the time revealed that the man had been observed peering through the glass windows of Amesbury’s office and questioning security personnel about their protocols.

As police continue their investigation, Amesbury’s future within the Labour Party and as a member of parliament remains uncertain, pending the outcome of the inquiry into this alleged violent incident.

Michael Lee Amesbury born 7 May 1969 is a British politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Runcorn and Helsby, and previously Weaver Vale since 2017. He had a number of shadow minister positions from 2018 to 2024.
