The Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojeed Fatai, has officially resigned from his position, effective immediately.
Fatai made this announcement during a plenary session on Monday, presided over by Speaker Mojisola Meranda. Addressing the lawmakers, he stated; “I hereby tender my resignation as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective today, March 3, 2025.”
Notably, former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was absent from the session. His removal from office in January over allegations of misappropriation had sparked significant political shifts within the Assembly.
Fatai’s resignation followed a closed-door meeting held outside the legislative chambers, involving Speaker Meranda, Obasa, and other members of the Assembly. While the specifics of their discussions remain undisclosed, the lawmakers reconvened afterward to proceed with legislative duties.
The recent political developments within the Lagos State Assembly began in January when Obasa was impeached over alleged financial misconduct. His then-deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was subsequently sworn in as Speaker. The situation has since led to a series of internal realignments within the Assembly’s leadership.
Fatai’s resignation marks another chapter in the ongoing political restructuring, leaving room for speculation about further changes in the Assembly’s leadership hierarchy.
