Delta Women Wail Over Kidnapping Epidemic

In a bold and emotional display, women from Abraka community in Delta State took to the streets to protest the alarming rate of kidnappings that has been continuously taking place in their area.

The protesters, made up of young women, expressed their desperation and frustration, calling for urgent action from authorities at all levels.

With placards that read "End Kidnapping in Abraka" and "Enough is Enough," the women barricaded the busy Abraka junction, causing a gridlock that left travelers stranded for hours, their message was clear: they've had enough of living in fear.

Madam Rose Agbajor, one of the protesters, when interviewed by Journalists shared her heartbreaking story. "We're tired of living in fear. Every day, there's a new case of kidnapping or gunmen attacking someone in our community. Our children are relocating, and Abraka is no longer safe for us."

The women also accused the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abraka Police Station, SP Fabian Ayameh, of failing to address the security challenges.

Speaking further, they called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to urgently redeploy the DPO and strengthen security measures across the state most especially in the Abraka axis.

The protest highlights the growing concern over kidnapping and insecurity in Nigeria.

The women's bravery and determination serve as a reminder that citizens will no longer tolerate inaction from authorities as the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the people of Abraka demand change, and they demand it now.

Across the country, the targeting of vulnerable populations has been widespread, including kidnappings for ransom or to pressure the government to meet the aggressors’ demands.

Security experts have revealed that worsening economic conditions have led to an increase in abductions for ransom over the last four years.

As Africa’s largest economy and a country with one of the strongest military forces on the continent, many have questioned why Nigeria has been unable to nip the trailing insecurity crisis in the bud.

Kidnappings and abduction is a major problem in Nigeria since from the early 21st century.

Kidnappings by bandits and insurgents is among the biggest organized or gang crime in Nigeria and is a national security challenge.
