Late Goals Hand United Derby Glory Over City

Manchester United stunned the defending Premier League champions, Manchester City, with an incredible late comeback to claim a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium. The win, which sees United leave City reeling with only one win from their last 11 matches across all competitions, marks a dramatic shift in the momentum of the Manchester derby, as the Red Devils clawed their way back from a goal down in the dying moments of the match.

The clash between these two sides was a far cry from the high-octane encounters seen in years past, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. The opening exchanges were marked by tension and hesitation, as neither Pep Guardiola's City nor Ruben Amorim's United seemed willing to take control of the game. A key moment early on came when United's Mason Mount was forced to leave the pitch due to injury, disrupting the visitors' midfield. The first real opportunity of the match came when Phil Foden skewed a volley wide, providing the first indication that both teams were trying, but failing, to make their mark.

Despite the early jitters, United gradually grew into the match, although they lacked the decisive edge in the final third, a theme that has plagued them this season. Manuel Ugarte had the visitors’ first effort at goal, but his shot flew over the bar. Shortly after, City took the lead in familiar fashion. A short corner routine led to a pinpoint cross from Kevin De Bruyne, which ricocheted perfectly into the path of Joško Gvardiol. The Croatian defender, left completely unmarked, made no mistake in heading the ball past United goalkeeper Andre Onana to give City the lead.

United, now behind, struggled to break down City’s defense. Amad Diallo, perhaps their most creative outlet on the day, had a chance to level the score when his header from a Bruno Fernandes cross was brilliantly saved by City’s Ederson. The visitors’ game plan appeared to be to wait for a moment of opportunity, but it was almost too late when Rasmus Højlund set up Fernandes for what looked like a simple finish. Unfortunately, Fernandes misfired, sending his chip wide of the goal.

Tempers flared shortly afterward as Højlund was visibly upset for not being awarded a penalty after a tackle by Rúben Dias in the box. Yet, the turning point came in the 85th minute when Amad Diallo, seizing on a calamitous backpass from City’s Matheus Nunes, was fouled by the midfielder in the penalty area. With the match hanging in the balance, Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake, sending Ederson the wrong way to equalize for United.

The drama didn’t end there. In the dying moments of the match, United completed their remarkable turnaround. A perfectly weighted through ball from Lisandro Martínez found Amad in acres of space. The Ivorian winger calmly rounded Ederson before slotting the ball into the net, sending the United fans into raptures and completing a stunning comeback. The goal capped off a brilliant performance from United in the second half, and with City’s defense in disarray, the home side had no answer.

This loss, City’s second in their last league meeting with United, leaves them a staggering nine points adrift of the top of the Premier League table. For United, the victory is a much-needed boost, signaling their resilience and the potential for a turnaround after a difficult start to the season.
