National Grid Collapse Will Not End Soon - FG

The Federal Government says that Nigerians suffering on national grid collapses will persist because of the deplorable state of the country’s power infrastructure disposition.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated this on Wednesday in Lagos State, where he called for the installment and establishment of power grids in different locations or states in other to put an end to consistent grid collapses.

The minister also added that, the national grid collapses are almost inevitable, hinting that having multiple power grids in each region and state, would improve on the power sector by ensuring stability.

Speaking on the Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in the 2023, the Minister noted that the decentralization of the power sector would aid the plans to create and establish grids in different regions situated in the thirty six states and capital of the nation.

On the Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, the Minister noted that the decentralisation of the power sector would help the plan to build grids in each region.

In his words Adelabu said explained that the new electricity Act allows both the state and local Government to participate in power generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.

“This Electricity Act has decentralised power. It has enabled all the subnational governments, the state government and the local government, to be able to participate in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. We all rely on a single national grid today; if there is a disturbance of the national grid, it affects all 36 states. It shouldn’t be like that. This will enable us to start moving gradually towards having regional groups and possibly having state grids"he said.

He also noted that, only states where grids are damaged will be affected and not the entire nation.

“And each of these grids will be removed and shielded from each other. So, if there’s a problem with a particular grid, only the state where it belongs will be affected, not the entire nation. So, this is one of the impacts this Electricity Act will have" he stated.

The Minister further stressed that grid collapse would be inevitable without sufficient investment of resources in the power sector across the nation.
