The national electricity grid has collapsed once again, causing widespread power outages across Nigeria. The incident, which occurred around 6:18 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, led to a total blackout in many parts of the country.
According to reports, power generation plummeted from 3.87 gigawatts at 5:00 p.m. to 3.56 gigawatts at 6:00 p.m., and eventually dropped to zero by 7:00 p.m.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the collapse in an official statement, informing customers of the "general system collapse" that occurred at 6:48 p.m. The statement, signed by EEDC's Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, acknowledged that the collapse resulted in a total loss of supply across the EEDC network.
"We are currently awaiting detailed information from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo regarding the cause of the collapse and the timeline for restoration of supply," the EEDC said.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a notice to its customers, confirming that the outage was due to a national grid failure at 6:58 p.m.
"Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid, affecting power supply to our franchise areas. We are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding," the AEDC said in a statement.
At the time of reporting, no further information had been provided about the cause of the collapse or when power would be restored. This latest grid collapse marks yet another disruption in Nigeria’s unstable electricity supply, leaving millions of Nigerians without power.
