Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stark warning about the country's current trajectory, describing Nigeria as "sitting on a keg of gunpowder”.


His recent remarks were made during an interview when asked if he would offer advice to current President Bola Tinubu, who has been facing growing criticism over his handling of Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.


In response, Obasanjo stated, the one time president of the federal Republic of Nigeria said, "I am not looking for a job”, implying his reluctance to get directly involved in offering counsel to Tinubu’s administration.


This comment underscores the former president's decision to distance himself from the current government’s policies, despite the country’s worsening situation.


Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Ogunboye Aremu Obasanjo GCFR is a Nigerian retired military officer and statesman who has served as the countries head of state in the 1970’s and later as its president from 1997 to 2007. He is known for his forthright opinions and influential role in Nigerian politics, has historically been vocal about the nation's direction, especially during times of political or economic crisis.


According to reports at hand, The former president’s warning about Nigeria "sitting on a keg of gunpowder" reflects the increasing instability and tension within the country.


Under Tinubu's leadership, Nigeria has faced rising inflation, high fuel prices, and economic hardships that have affected millions of Nigerians.


The removal of fuel subsidies, a key policy of Tinubu's government, has contributed to widespread discontent, leading to protests and strikes across the nation.


Obasanjo’s statement of a ticking time bomb suggests that if these issues remain unaddressed, the country could face serious social unrest or worse.

The Social issues, including unemployment, insecurity, and poor infrastructure, continue to plague the nation, putting significant pressure on Tinubu's administration to act swiftly and effectively.


He also suggested that for Nigeria to attain its highest status, all hands must be on deck, just as

“our mentality should also change”.
