In a powerful address at the 22nd Convocation Lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), spotlighted the crucial role of skills acquisition and entrepreneurship in shaping Nigeria's future.
Speaking to the graduating cadets of the 71 Regular Course and post-graduate students on September 24, 2024, he called for the integration of these vital programs into the NDA's curriculum.
Ahmed asserted that this educational enhancement would foster sustainable land use and equip cadets with essential agricultural skills, enriching their training and promoting self-sufficiency. “The extensive land available at the NDA should be utilized for agricultural production,” he emphasized, urging the academy to seize this opportunity.
He underscored that skills acquisition is not only beneficial for personal development but critical to national security. “If someone is engaged and has something to do, they won’t resort to negative actions against their country,” he noted, highlighting the importance of individual responsibility in national progress.
Maj.-Gen. John Ochai, Commandant of the NDA, echoed Ahmed's sentiments, recognizing the lecture as a vital reminder of the importance of practical skills alongside academic knowledge. “Acquiring skills enables individuals to contribute meaningfully to society and the national economy,” he said, encouraging graduates to pursue their unique talents.
