Obasa Reinstated As Speaker Of Lagos State Assembly

Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, March 3, 2025, nearly two months after his impeachment. The representative for Agege State Constituency 1, Obasa, had been ousted from his position in January of this year following allegations of misconduct, marking a tense period in the state’s legislative history.

Obasa’s return to office was made possible after Mojisola Meranda, who replaced him as Speaker in January, stepped down, paving the way for a fresh election. The session saw Noheem Adams, the former Majority Leader and representative of Eti-Osa Constituency 1, nominating Obasa for reinstatement. His nomination was met with broad support from members of the House, who voted to restore him to his former position.

Obasa’s impeachment in January had been a significant political moment in Lagos State, as more than 30 lawmakers voted to remove him from office. His ousting was seen as a reflection of growing internal discontent within the House, as well as mounting public pressure for greater accountability among elected officials. The nearly two-month absence from office did little to diminish Obasa’s influence, however, as he maintained a firm grip on his political base and worked behind the scenes to regain his position.

Addressing the House after being sworn in once again as Speaker, Obasa took a conciliatory tone. He assured lawmakers that there would be no retribution against those who voted for his impeachment in January. “I am here to serve, not to settle scores,” Obasa said. He emphasized the need for unity within the Assembly and called for an end to political infighting that had hindered legislative progress in recent months.

Obasa’s re-election marks the continuation of his long tenure as Speaker, a position he has held since 2015. Known for his political resilience and deep connections within Lagos State's power circles, Obasa has weathered multiple challenges throughout his career. His return to the leadership of the House is likely to signal both stability and renewed scrutiny, as observers watch how he navigates the complexities of his second stint as Speaker.

The political dynamics in Lagos State’s House of Assembly are likely to shift in the coming weeks, with Obasa’s reinstatement potentially altering legislative priorities. For many lawmakers and political analysts, the focus now will be on whether Obasa can rebuild trust within the Assembly and steer the body toward effective governance.

As the House of Assembly resumes its duties under Obasa’s leadership, attention will be focused on key legislative matters, including budgetary concerns, infrastructure projects, and efforts to address the pressing needs of Lagosians. The coming months will reveal whether Obasa’s return will foster greater cohesion within the House or whether lingering tensions will continue to impact its work.
