Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially signed the 2025 Abia State Appropriation Bill into law.
The bill, which had been passed earlier by the Abia State House of Assembly, was signed by Otti on Friday, December 27, 2024, marking a significant step towards the state’s continued development.
The signing ceremony, held at the Government House in Umuahia, was attended by a host of key figures, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, Clerk of the House, Mr. John Pedro Irokansi, as well as other members of the Assembly and several of Governor Otti’s appointees.
In a statement issued after the signing, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Ferdinand Ekeoma, emphasized the importance of the bill’s passage for the future of Abia State.
Ekeoma noted that the signing of the Appropriation Bill heralds a new era of growth and transformation, as Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to using the 2025 budget as a tool for advancing the state’s economy.
“This budget is an extension of the strong foundation that this administration has worked hard to establish over the past 18 months,” Governor Otti said.
“With the 2025 budget, we are not only consolidating the progress made but also setting the stage for even greater achievements. Our focus will be on areas like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation, which are key to ensuring sustainable growth and prosperity for Abia”, he added.
The 2025 budget, which is set at N750.28 billion, represents a 30% increase from the 2024 budget. Of this total, a significant portion—approximately 82%, or N611.7 billion—is allocated to capital projects, underlining Governor Otti’s commitment to infrastructural development.
This large focus on capital expenditure is expected to accelerate the pace of development across Abia, with particular attention to critical sectors such as roads, education facilities, healthcare infrastructure, and industrialization.
Governor Otti’s emphasis on capital projects is rooted in his belief that investing in infrastructure is key to unlocking the state’s full economic potential. By prioritizing the development of physical infrastructure, the Governor aims to create an environment that attracts both local and foreign investments, while also improving the quality of life for Abians.
Economists and political analysts have lauded Otti’s approach, noting that the focus on infrastructure could make Abia one of the fastest-growing states in Nigeria.
Over the past 18 months, the state has already witnessed significant improvements in various sectors, and with this ambitious budget, many are optimistic that the momentum will be maintained.
The Governor stated that his clear vision for Abia is to create a self-sustaining economy driven by a diversified industrial base. Job creation and economic empowerment are central to this vision, as Otti looks to harness the state’s human and natural resources to build a prosperous future for the people of Abia.
