Otti Under Fire: Group Demands Proof of Completed Projects

In Abia State, tension are on the rise as Governor Alex Otti encounters mounting criticism over the execution of his administration’s projects and the achievements reported since he assumed office 18 months ago.

Supporters view Otti as a standard for infrastructural development and effective governance in the Southeast and beyond. In contrast, opposition contend that his successes are largely confined to media narratives rather than tangible progress on the ground.

The Abia State Anti-Corruption Watch Group has raised concerns about the transparency of the state’s finances and the execution of projects under Governor Otti’s administration,

They are urging the governor to present concrete evidence detailing the locations and progress of various high-profile initiatives.

Eke Steve Ako, the spokesman for the group, demanded clarification regarding the N6.5 billion allocated for recreational facilities.

The projects in question involve significant amounts of money, including N11.94 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of public schools, N4.8 billion for office buildings, N3 billion for infrastructure, N7.28 billion for research and development, N3 billion for capacity building, and N1 billion for erosion control.

Ako stated, “We declare that the above projects are non-existent in Abia State. We have searched for these projects with our natural eyes but couldn’t succeed.

“Similarly, all our efforts to trace the locations of these multi-billion-naira-manipulated projects in Abia State with the use of world-class Artificial Intelligence (AI) have abysmally failed.

“It, therefore, suggests that only the executor of the projects knows the exact locations he cited them for the acclaimed benefit of our people. We, therefore, call on Governor Alex Otti to show us the locations of the above projects he claimed to have implemented with Abia State’s fund.”

Additional projects under scrutiny include N110 million for a cocoa factory and inland port, as well as N713 million in TETFUND financial assistance for Abia State Polytechnic in Aba.

Abia businessman and politician Emmanuel Egwu dismissed the projects as “fictitious,” asserting, “The contracts are imaginary, they don’t exist anywhere. If they do, the Commissioner of Works should explain to the people of Abia where the roads are.”

Egwu further challenged the government: “Last month, I issued a challenge that if these roads exist, they should come and claim one million naira. I went to several radio stations with the cheque and invited them to show us the 108 roads they claimed to have repaired. To this day, no one has come forward.”

While acknowledging that some roads may exist, Egwu accused the government of inflating the scope and costs of completed projects. “Make no mistake, some of these roads do exist, but he is exaggerating the number of roads he has executed. We need to understand the cost implications of these roads. As a taxpayer living in Abia, I have a vested interest in this matter.”

Egwu also questioned the claims about the construction of recreational centers.

He said, “Otti stated that he spent around N4 billion on building recreation centers and parks. However, none of these facilities can be found; what we’re seeing lately are just bus stops. I’m not sure if bus stops can be compared to recreation parks,”
