Peace Day: NYCN Tasks Youths to Embrace Peace

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in marking the International Day of Peace, the National Youth Council of Nigeria NYCN has called on youths to embrace peace.

The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria NYCN Rivers State Chapter Chimenem Worlu said this at the sideline of an event to mark the International Day of Peace on Saturday, September 21, 2024, in Port Harcourt.

He said the International Day of Peace is a day set aside to celebrate the power of global solidarity for building a peaceful and sustainable world.

The NYCN Chairman in Rivers State charged youths in the state to use the day to promote peaceful co-existence among different groups and ethnic nationalities in the state.

He said that youths must be in the driving seat of the development of the state and tasked them to contribute their ideas and expertise to the development of the state.

Worlu also urged youths from Ijaw extraction to shun violence and live together in peace and harmony.

He also called on the government in the state to accord due respect for one another as a way of promoting peace in the state.

In a related development, the Center for Gender, Conflict, and Development Studies at the University of Port Harcourt is calling for the promotion of peace through education to foster peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.

The Director of the Center for Gender, Conflict and Development Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Heoma Worlu made the suggestion in a statement to commemorate the International Peace Day.

Professor Heoma Worlu also noted that gender equality and participatory politics can advance peace in the country.

“To contribute to world peace there are eight thematic areas that we want to propagate here. First, fostering cultural peace through education, ensuring equality between men and women. For us as a Centre for Gender, we talk about equity as a process and equality as the goal, therefore in your homes and offices ensure that the males and the females have equal opportunities to express their capabilities. Also fostering democratic participation would ensure that global peace is maintained”

The theme for this year's edition of the International Day of Peace is "Cultivating a Culture of Peace".
