The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed that a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, is currently under investigation at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters in Abuja.
The lawmaker, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency, is accused of physically assaulting an e-hailing driver, one Stephen Abuwatseya, following a dispute over a delivery.
According to a viral video circulating on social media, Ikwechegh allegedly slapped Abuwatseya after the driver requested payment for a delivery service.
It was learnt that during the exchange, Ikwechegh reportedly threatened the driver, asking if he “knew who he was talking to” and implying that he had the power to make him "disappear" without consequences.
The confrontation escalated, with Ikwechegh allegedly taunting the driver to "go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police," showcasing what the police describe as a "contemptuous attitude" toward law enforcement.
In an official statement released Monday, FCT Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest that the incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
Adeh stated, “The FCT Police Command has received a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.”
The FCT Police Command has expressed serious concerns over the lawmaker's perceived disregard for the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the incident. The Command also condemned Ikwechegh's alleged actions as bringing the office of the Inspector General into disrepute.
In response to the allegations, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the matter. "The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken," Adeh emphasized.
Adeh added that "As of now, Hon. Ikwechegh remains in police custody at the Maitama Division, where he is being questioned. "
The investigation the statement added will help to determine the facts surrounding the altercation.
However, the FCT Police Command has assured the public of its dedication to a thorough and transparent inquiry.
