Police Launch Investigation into Student's Mysterious Death in Kwara

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic.


The case was transferred to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja to ensure a comprehensive, and detailed probe.


Abdulyekeen, a National Diploma 2 student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering, was allegedly killed by police officers in a mysterious circumstance in Ilorin, the state capital.


The incident occurred on September 4, 2024, and has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice.


Three police officers, Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, attached to the Department of Operations, Kwara State Command, have been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.


In a statement, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi said the event deeply saddens the Inspector General of Police and has expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.


He assured that justice will be served and that the police will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind Abdulyekeen's death.


The transfer of the case to Abuja is seen as a move to ensure a neutral and impartial investigation, away from local influences.


The Homicide Section of the FCID Abuja will lead the investigation, which is expected to be thorough and comprehensive.


The statement from the Force spokesman read: “IG has ordered the Homicide Section of the FCID Abuja to embark on a detailed and comprehensive investigation into the alleged killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Kwara State, which occurred on September 4, 2024.


“The officers involved in this incident have been identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, attached to the Department of Operations, Kwara State Command and they have been consequently detained for investigation.


“The Inspector-General of Police, who is deeply saddened by this unfortunate event that has led to the loss of a young Nigerian, expresses his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.


“He acknowledges the profound grief and loss caused by this unfortunate act and reassures the family and members of the public that Justice will be served.”
