Released Imo Medical Director Battles For Life

The Medical Director of St David's Hospital Ikenegbu Layout Owerri Imo State, Dr Chibueze Anyanwu may be flown abroad for proper medical care as efforts to properly stitch his tongue appear not to be successful.

Our correspondent gathered that stitching his tongue which his abductors gave a deep incision seems not be succeeding even as the doctor find it difficult to talk coherently.

Unknown gunmen had on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 swooped on the residence of Dr. David Anyanwu, owner of St David’s Hospital Ikenegbu Layout Owerri, Imo State and whisked his son, Dr. Chibueze away.

The gunmen had blocked his car in the front and at the back with their own two vehicles as he made to drive into his residence after an outing.

Dr. Chibueze Anyanwu, who is now the Medical Director of the hospital following the retirement of his father attempted running inside the house but his abductors outsmarted and caught him.

At this time, the captors released some volley of bullets into the air to announce that they meant business.

Panic spread across the neigbhourhood as residents began to flee in different directions.  As they were scampering for their dear lives, the abductors took their catch away in a breadth-taking speed.

It was gathered that Dr. Chibueze’s sibling quickly placed a call on the cellphone of his brother.

It rang and the abductors commanded him to pick it. They also told the family that they would return the call on reaching their hideout.

The captors did return the call and negotiations commenced.

Our correspondent was told that Chibueze’s captors demanded the sum of N10million but the family was able to beat it down to N6million and swiftly transferred the money to placate the kidnappers.

But seeing the ease with which the ransom money came, the kidnappers insisted on the balance of N4 million.

All pleadings by the family to accept the N6million and let Chibueze off the hook were rebuffed as the kidnappers remained adamant.

According to a source close to the family, before now the captors had inflicted external injuries on Chibueze’s body which was shown to the family via a video call.

The most painful injury was making a deep incision on Chibueze’s tongue. Our source said the family could no longer bear the sight and pains which Chibueze was writhing in after the deep incision on his tongue and had to transfer the balance of N4million.

The source further disclosed that since Dr. Chibueze’s release at about 1:00am on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, doctors have been battling to save his life.

“He finds it difficult to talk coherently. From the way things are going, he may be flown abroad for better medical care’, the source said.

Dr. Chibueze’s kidnap is coming five years after his father, Dr. David Anyanwu was similarly kidnapped and released after payment of ransom.

The kidnap has compelled residents of Aladinma Owerri to tighten security in the estate. Gates into the estate are now locked at 7:00pm as against 11:00pm before the incident.

At present, only residents are allowed into the estate after 7:00pm. A member of the Agbata Obioma Aladinma Neighbourhood Watch told this reporter that more security men have been hired to beef up security at the estate.
