Power Generation: Bayelsa Secures Gas Supply Deal

In a decisive step toward tackling Bayelsa State’s energy crisis, Governor Douye Diri has announced the state’s successful negotiation of a major gas supply agreement with International Oil Companies (IOCs). The deal will fuel the Independent Power Plant (IPP) project aimed at providing uninterrupted electricity to the state. This breakthrough was revealed during the 140th State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Yenagoa, on Wednesday.

Governor Diri sympathized with Bayelsans over the state’s prolonged power outages, which have left residents in darkness for an extended period. He assured citizens that his administration is actively working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore power as quickly as possible. However, the governor emphasized that a more sustainable solution lies in the state's upcoming IPP, which will significantly reduce reliance on the national grid.

"We understand the current frustration of our people and are working tirelessly to restore power in collaboration with the TCN," Governor Diri stated. "However, beyond this, we are focused on building a more sustainable power infrastructure. We’ve secured a gas supply agreement with IOCs operating in Bayelsa, and once our gas turbine is installed, Bayelsa will enjoy 24-hour power supply."

The governor expressed confidence that the installation of the gas turbine would herald a new era of energy stability in the state, drastically improving the quality of life for residents and creating a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive.

In a move that underscores his administration’s broader development agenda, Governor Diri also announced the arrival of a rice mill and tractors donated by the Korean Government. The equipment, now in Yenagoa, marks a significant leap in the state’s efforts to strengthen its agricultural sector. The newly acquired assets will revolutionize rice production in Bayelsa, equipping local farmers with the tools needed for large-scale, mechanized farming.

Governor Diri reiterated his commitment to improving the state's agricultural output, noting that these investments are part of a broader strategy to diversify the state's economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues. “Agriculture remains a key pillar of our economic development plan,” he said. “The arrival of these resources from Korea will empower our farmers and boost rice production, positioning Bayelsa as a leading agricultural producer in the country.”

With these twin developments in the power and agricultural sectors, the governor’s administration is signaling its resolve to deliver on promises of economic growth and improved living standards.

Bayelsa is on the verge of a major transformation, with 24-hour electricity on the horizon and an agricultural boost that will create jobs, stimulate the economy, and ensure food security. As the gas supply agreement moves forward and the rice mill begins operations, the people of Bayelsa can look forward to a brighter and more prosperous future.
