Retired Teachers Urge Abia Schools to Equip Students with Skills

Retired teachers under the auspices of "The Abia Retired Teachers Forum" are advocating for schools to prioritize equipping students with practical skills.

At a meeting with Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, Coordinator of the Forum, Mrs. Eunice Egbuna suggested several initiatives, such as implementing a “One Child, One Skill” policy, launching practical agriculture programs, and restoring teachers’ quarters in schools.

Egbuna emphasized that incorporating hands-on learning experiences into the curriculum is essential for preparing students for real-world challenges, ensuring they are knowledgeable and capable of applying their skills effectively in future careers.

She stressed that education must be practical, especially amid rising unemployment, and underscored the importance of equipping students with essential skills before they finish their 12 years of primary and secondary education.

Egbuna detailed how the “One Child, One Skill” policy would necessitate updates to the curricula in Abia schools to include relevant skills. She stated, “The curriculum should be flexible and reviewed every nine years to remain up-to-date.

"Parents will select skills for their children, which will be registered at schools. This approach will enable students to engage in hands-on learning and develop expertise through continuous practice, culminating in competitions and recognition for top performers.

"Suggested pilot skills include fashion design, beauty and makeup artistry, hairdressing, interior decoration, solar installation, photography, web design, and more".

Egbuna asserted that these skills could be incorporated into public schools throughout Abia to enhance the educational experience.

The Forum's coordinator also advocated for practical agriculture to instill a sense of food production in students, urging schools to become centers for agricultural education.

She outlined plans to implement modern farming methods, including borehole irrigation, to ensure consistent crop production and marketing.

They also called for the renovation of existing schools, enhanced security measures, and initiatives to address examination malpractice. They also proposed establishing reading clubs and science/math centers throughout the state.
