Otti Declares Clamp Down On Civil Servants Involved in Pension Fraud

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has issued a stern warning: anyone implicated in the mismanagement or theft of state pension funds will face justice. In an impassioned statement during his November media briefing at Government House, Umuahia, Otti confirmed recent investigations exposing the involvement of certain civil servants in widespread pension fraud. The governor expressed zero tolerance for corruption and stressed that the crackdown on this misconduct was part of a sweeping effort to cleanse the civil service.

“We’ve heard reports of civil servants implicated in pension fraud,” Otti revealed, adding that arrests have already been made. His remarks also took aim at critics: “When someone steals and I have them arrested, and the opposition criticizes me for it, what does that imply? If you defend a thief, then you’re a thief yourself.”

Otti announced that a security report on the matter has been submitted, and the culprits are expected to be formally charged in the coming days. His tough stance on corruption has drawn sharp responses from political opponents, but the governor remains resolute in his commitment to see justice done.

In an expansive vision for healthcare reform, Governor Otti announced that his administration is about to launch a major rehabilitation project aimed at revitalizing the state’s Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs). Otti outlined plans to refurbish 200 PHCs across Abia’s three senatorial districts and 17 local government areas as part of an initiative to improve access to quality healthcare. The ambitious undertaking is set to roll out in phases, with plans to reach every PHC in the state.

In addition, the governor confirmed that renovations of 22 secondary healthcare centers are already underway. Alongside these infrastructure upgrades, the administration is working to attract skilled personnel to the state’s health facilities by offering competitive salaries.

Governor Otti further announced an aggressive push in infrastructure development, with new road construction projects now underway across Abia. Contracts have been awarded for critical roads such as the 5.5-km Onuimo-Abia Tower Road, the 29-km Onuinyang-Okporoenyi-Oboro-Ikwuano Road, and several others crucial to connecting communities and enhancing economic activity. These projects reflect Otti’s pledge to bolster socioeconomic growth by addressing the state’s longstanding infrastructure challenges.

Governor Otti’s focus on economic revitalization includes empowering the youth through agriculture. He confirmed the disbursement of funds to support 300 young Abians undergoing government-sponsored training in modern farming techniques. This is part of a broader strategy to boost productivity and promote agricultural innovation across the state.

Abia is also experiencing a surge in foreign investment, with recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics positioning the state as third nationwide in attracting international investors, trailing only Lagos and Abuja. Between June 2023 and June 2024, Abia attracted nearly $150.9 million in foreign investment.

“Foreign investment isn’t driven by platitudes; it responds to action,” Otti declared. The governor has been vocal about his goal to make Abia a top destination for investors and is committed to creating an enabling business environment to sustain the upward momentum.
