River Crisis: PDP Governor's Dare Wike, Stands with Fubara

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have insisted that their recognition of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State as leader of the party in the state stands.

Niger Delta Connect had reported that the former governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Fubara have been squabbling over the party’s leadership structure.

Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, cautioned PDP governors to avoid Rivers State and posed a threat to set fire in their respective states if they continue to support his estranged son.

Governor Bala Mohammed, who is the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, stated that their support for Fubara cannot be withdrawn in response to Wike's controversial outbursts.

Upon receiving the delegation of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Mohammed, the current Governor of Bauchi State, expressed that the decision made by the PDP governors was appropriate.

In his interview with journalists shortly after the meeting, Mohammed stated that as the foremost member of the PDP in Rivers state, Governor Fubara should have control over the party’s structure.

He told newsmen that the NWC delegation has supported “the decision of the PDP Governors’ Forum to back Rivers State Governor Similaye Fubara as the leader of the PDP in the state.

“The decision is in order and that is how it is supposed to be. Governor Fubara is the leader of the party in the state. It is along this line that we collectively agreed for the rule of law, and the delegation gave their firm commitment and support for the position of the PDP Governors Forum in Rivers State.”

“We all know the relationship between the FCT Minister and the current Governor of Rivers state which is that of the mentor and the mentee. We are working behind the scenes to ensure they come together to work together in a manner that PDP is known for.

“Certainly, it is not something we can dictate here but we have summoned the courage and the will to ensure that the correct thing is done,” he said

The political crisis in Rivers state began since October last year with series of unfolding events.
