RIVERS: Gov Fubara Pledges Unwavering Support for Justice Amidst Tension

In a powerful declaration at the opening of the 2024/2025 Legal Year and Re-Dedication Service, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, reaffirmed his commitment to uphold justice in the state, promising to fight for truth and fairness against all odds. Speaking at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul's in Diobu, Port Harcourt, the Governor’s impassioned speech resonated deeply, especially in a climate where the integrity of the judiciary is under scrutiny.

Governor Fubara emphasized that the judiciary must remain a sacred temple of justice, accessible and impartial to all who seek it. "The Judiciary is not just an institution; it is a sanctuary for truth and equity," he proclaimed. His comments struck a chord with many, as he urged judges to dispense justice without fear or favoritism, challenging legal professionals who, he claimed, compromise their ethics for the sake of their paymasters.

Addressing the current challenges facing the judiciary, Fubara highlighted the threats and intimidation some judicial officers endure. "I know many of you have faced threats and even physical assaults," he stated, urging them to remain steadfast in their duty to uphold justice. "Persecution often accompanies righteousness. Stand firm; this storm will pass," he reassured.

The Governor's candid remarks extended to a broader critique of legal practices in the state, where he accused certain lawyers of manipulating the law for personal gain. "Some claim to be legal luminaries but twist the truth for their masters," he said, emphasizing that the law regarding governance issues falls squarely within the jurisdiction of the State High Court. He called out these individuals, stating, "God will judge you for your actions."

In a call to action for the judiciary, Fubara stated that judges must embody integrity, acting as representatives of justice. "You are the God we see in the courtroom. Your duty is to protect the truth," he urged, warning of the severe consequences for those who fail in this duty.

The Governor praised the Rivers State Judiciary for its resilience amidst adversity, noting that their support has been crucial for his administration. He assured the judges that his leadership would always uphold their autonomy and never pressure them into unethical decisions. "If I ever ask you to do anything wrong, I implore you to expose me publicly," he stated firmly.

Bishop Wisdom Budu Ihunwo, who delivered the sermon, echoed the Governor's sentiments, decrying the incoherent judicial decisions that plague the nation. He cautioned that such discrepancies jeopardize the unity and governance of Nigeria, warning that those who distort justice will ultimately face divine retribution.
