Just In: Africa's First Men’s Junior Epee World Cup Begins

Nigeria is on the verge of making history as it prepares to host the first-ever Men’s Junior Epee World Cup in Sub-Saharan Africa. The event, scheduled to take place from December 14, 2024, at Charterhouse Lagos, promises to be a groundbreaking occasion for the country and the continent.

This prestigious tournament, sanctioned by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), will attract fencing teams from a diverse range of countries, including Benin Republic, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Togo, Oman, and host nation Nigeria. A total of 34 talented fencers will compete for individual honors, with world ranking points up for grabs. This marks a significant milestone for Nigerian sports, as the event represents the first international fencing competition hosted at the iconic Charterhouse Lagos venue.

The two-day event is not only a crucial moment for the Nigerian Fencing Federation (NFF) but also a reflection of the country's growing prominence in international fencing. This competition is a pivotal step in strengthening Nigeria's standing within the global fencing community, and it has attracted the attention of key officials from the FIE and the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, who will be present to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Nigeria’s involvement in the tournament is particularly significant, as it lays the groundwork for the country’s bid to host the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in 2026. This opportunity to host major international fencing events could pave the way for greater investment in the sport and inspire future generations of Nigerian athletes.

Coach Ibrahim Alogba, who is leading the Nigerian team, has expressed confidence in his athletes, particularly Wisdom Okanlawon, who will spearhead the nation’s charge. The Nigerian team is determined to showcase their skill and resilience against stiff competition, with top-seeded fencers from Egypt posing a major challenge. Egypt’s Eslam Osama is the tournament's highest-ranked fencer, followed by compatriots Youssef Shamel and Mahmoud Elsayed, who hold the second and third spots, respectively. These fencers will be tough competitors, but the Nigerian team is ready to face them head-on.

Other key contenders for the title include Kenton Jia Hsu from Hong Kong and Artemios Tzovanis from Greece, both of whom bring a wealth of experience to the competition.

For the Nigeria Fencing Federation, led by Adeyinka Samuel, the event marks a significant leap forward in the country’s development of the sport. Samuel highlighted the importance of the tournament for Nigerian athletes, explaining that it eliminates the need for them to travel abroad for ranking points. With this event being held on home soil, Nigerian fencers can earn valuable points while reducing the financial burden typically associated with international travel.

“We’ve worked tirelessly for months to prepare for this historic event. Having this competition in Nigeria is not just a win for our athletes, but also for the entire African fencing community. It represents the progress we’ve made, and the continued growth of fencing in Africa,” Samuel said. “It’s a stepping stone toward greater success, including our aspirations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.”

The anticipation surrounding the Men’s Junior Epee World Cup in Lagos is palpable, and it is clear that this event will be a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey to becoming a leading force in the world of fencing.
