RIVERS LG POLL: Amaewhule-Led Assembly Calls For Suspension Of Election

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, has passed a resolution calling for the suspension of the upcoming Local Government Elections, citing a recent judgment from the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Assembly's decision comes as tensions rise in the state, with the electoral landscape hanging in the balance.

The resolution, which is to be communicated to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) through a strongly worded letter, reflects growing concerns over the legality and readiness of the October 5 elections. This unexpected move follows a fervent protest by members of the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who took to the streets on Thursday, demonstrating against the scheduled elections.

During their protest march, PDP stakeholders, led by Aron Chukwuemeka, made their voices heard at both the Department of State Security (DSS) office and the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital. Chukwuemeka emphasized that the primary objective of the protest was to firmly oppose the upcoming elections, calling attention to perceived irregularities and potential legal challenges.

Contrastingly, and as reported by our correspondent, the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, expressed a commitment to conducting the Local Government Elections in accordance with the rule of law. During a plenary session, Oko-Jumbo reiterated the Assembly's alignment with the Executive Arm of Government and Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s stance on the importance of establishing a duly elected local government leadership.

Oko-Jumbo stated that the elections, set for October 5, 2024, must proceed as planned, ensuring that they comply with existing legal judgments and constitutional requirements. His comments signal a significant divide in the political landscape of Rivers State, with the Assembly advocating for electoral processes while the PDP protests against them.

As the election date approaches, the situation has become increasingly complex. The Assembly's resolution to suspend the elections raises questions about the future of local governance in Rivers State and the potential implications for political stability. With the PDP and the Assembly taking opposing positions, the people of Rivers State find themselves at a critical crossroads.

The ongoing debate over the local elections underscores the broader issues of governance, electoral integrity, and the rule of law in Nigeria. As stakeholders continue to voice their concerns, all eyes will be on how the RSIEC responds to the Assembly's resolution and the protests from the PDP.
