N77,000: Corpers Frustrated As FG Fails Promise

The Federal Government of Nigeria found itself embroiled in a controversy after a widely publicized announcement regarding the implementation of the new minimum wage. The government announced that Corp members that will start receiving an increased salary of N77,000 and that the implementation will start reading from July 2024. Saying that the arrears will also be paid accordingly. According to them, it is a significant increment aimed at aligning with the newly proposed minimum wage.


The announcement sparked hope and optimism among the Call Members many of whom had long anticipated an adjustment to their wages in light of economic challenges. For days, the promise of better pay was celebrated, Call Members shared the news with their families and communities, eagerly awaiting their upgraded compensation.


However, when payday arrived, the reality was starkly different. Instead of receiving the promised N77,000, Corpers were met with disappointment as they found their pay remained unchanged. The expected increment did not materialize, and the usual salary amounts were disbursed without any adjustments. 


This sudden and unexpected development has led to widespread frustration and confusion. Those who had believed in the government's promise found themselves in an uncomfortable position, having to explain to their families and peers why their wages had not increased as announced. The government, which had once confidently broadcast its plans, now faced backlash from the public, who felt deceived by what appeared to be empty promises.
