Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has penned down a heartfelt memorial birthday message for Late Herbert Wigwe on his 58th posthumous birthday.
The Governor in his emotional note described Wigwe who was the Group CEO of access holdings before his death as a beacon of hope, an inspiring and visionary leader who led an exemplary life.
In his memorial birthday message on Thursday, August 15, 2024 on his X handle, the Lagos State Governor said the death of the founder of Access Bank and Wigwe University was a heavy loss to the nation.
Recall that Wigwe died in a helicopter crash with his wife, son, and a former Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
The governor still in his eulogies emphasised that the late Wigwe was a visionary leader who was an inspiration to many during his lifetime, describing him as a patriot who had an unwavering belief in the Nigerian project.
It read: “Today (Thursday) would have been Herbert’s 58th birthday, and we would have shared a laugh together. The pain of his loss is still so raw, but today, I choose to remember the man who was more than a brother and friend to me.
“Herbert’s wisdom, vision, and unwavering belief in Nigeria remain etched in our hearts. We miss you deeply, my brother.
“He was not just a leader; he was a beacon of hope and a visionary inspiring many. We honor his legacy of progress, integrity, and love for our country.

“As we remember Herbert today, let us celebrate the incredible life he lived.
“Rest in peace, my dear brother. Your spirit lives on in every heart you touched.”
Meanwhile, Wigwe University, situated in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, has launched a fully funded scholarship program.
The Institution Founded by the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, aims to support 100 students with full-tuition scholarships, enabling them to pursue their academic dreams without financial burden.
