The World Trade Organization (WTO) has confirmed the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, aged 70, expressed her desire to pursue a second term in September, and no other candidates were put forward prior to the nomination deadline on November 8. The WTO's General Council has officially validated her reappointment, which will commence on September 1, 2025.
This decision, reached by consensus among the 166 member countries of the WTO, underscores Dr. Okonjo-Iweala's adeptness in managing the intricacies of global trade diplomacy. The WTO announced this development on X (formerly Twitter) today, stating: “Breaking: the General Council has appointed Director-General @NOIweala for a second term, effective 1 September 2025. Her reappointment solidifies Dr. Okonjo-Iweala's leadership of the global trade organization, a position she has occupied since 2021.
