Seven Confirmed Dead In Abuja Building Collapse

Report says seven youths commonly called Babanbola who were stripping iron rods from beams and columns of a demolished building in Sabon Lugbe in Abuja have lost their lives yesterday, while two others were evacuated and rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja for urgent medical care.

Report indicates that the multi-storey building was illegally erected so it was brought down by the FCT Department of Development Control on Thursday.

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) in a recent statement confirmed that seven dead bodies of iron scavengers were recovered and however dismissed as untrue some media reports that about 40 persons were trapped under the rubble.

The Director of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed said many youths invaded the demolished building site, pulling down and carting away iron rods and this triggered the remains of a slab to fall on them.

He noted that one of the deceased climbed the slab, hitting the iron when it suddenly fell, and killed him.

Abdulrahman also stated that the Chairman, Miyetti Allah, FCT chapter, Mohammed Hussein confirmed to FEMD that five members of the association were removed dead from the rubble.

He said seven other persons were rescued alive from the rubble of the collapsed building, noting that FEMD had called off its search and rescue, after excavation of the incident site revealed that there were no more persons trapped in the rubble.

He appealed to scavengers to stay off the demolition sites to avert future occurrence.

He also called on the FCT residents to always use the 112-toll free emergency number in the event of a disaster.

The director explained, “Nobody was living in the building as claimed by reports.

“We were here last night and we are here today [yesterday] again. The Chairman of Miyetti Allah in the Abuja municipal was here with us and he confirmed that they lost five of their members in the incident''.

“Right now as we speak, some of them are still up there scavenging iron rods. They have been asked to leave but they have refused to listen.

“We are going to ensure that they leave the site. on Monday, the Development Control will come around to ensure that the remaining buildings are brought down completely.”

An eyewitness, Aliyu Musa said the iron scavengers were warned not to go into the building but they did not heed.

Also narrating the incident, Director, Department of Development Control, FCT, Mukhtar Galadima said, “The subject building is within the site currently under demolition and the subject structure was an uncompleted building which was demolished on Thursday.

“Information gathered is that the site recorded mass influx of scavengers, over 500 in number pulling down and carting away remains of iron rods. “Their activities triggered the remains of a demolished slab to fall on them.”
