Tantita Tasks N/ Delta on Carbon Capture for Socio-economic Development

Executive Director, Operations and Technical, Tantita Security Services Nigeria limited, Captain Warredi Enisuoh, has called on the people of the Niger Delta region to consider the economic potentials in carbon streaming, carbon credit and carbon capturing as an alternative source of income instead of engaging in pipeline vandalization and further degrading of the environment.

Enisuoh made the call yesterday at the Pre-Summit Conference of the First Pan-Ijaw Economic Summit held at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Yenagoa, when he spoke about the "infrastructure which could come from the carbon capture industry and protection of the already existing infrastructure", with the assistance of the government.

He noted that the socio-economic problems cannot be removed from the security issues in the region, adding that capturing carbon can generate a lot of money for the communities so that they can take their taste bud off the crude oil pipeline which is damaging the environment, creating a reduction in life span and a situation whereby the environment is almost becoming inhabitable.

He said, "We are here to also market ideas of carbon streaming, carbon credit and carbon capture which this region is very rich in, in terms of capturing carbon and it can generate a lot of money for the community. We came up with the whole thing of carbon capture and it is not very popular in the region at the moment.

"With carbon capture, we have a lot of trees in this area that can absorb Co2 from the atmosphere. If they do not pollute the environment any further, these tress can strive and we will be able to take stock of these trees and then be able to generate income for companies that stream carbon and these are companies around the world.

"We are willing to partner with regions like this in exchange for green development to participate in industrial development that is not going to create further carbon emission and creating more global warming and also be able to improve the health well being of the habitants in that area alongside the development they are going to face.

"That is why we have come here to talk about how the communities can benefit from not going to the pipelines instead they should see other sources of income from their environment which is very rich in mangroves trees that absorbs Co2 and as I said one tree alone can resolve 80 kilogram of Co2 and that is quite a lot of money.

"If you have thousands of such trees in your community working with the boundary commission here and then your community can exchange this whole carbon capture capacity which they have instead of going to break pipeline and further degrading your environment which you cannot use for farming, you cannot use fishing, you cannot use for anything. So that’s the whole idea."
