Three Female Students Tops NERC Energy Essay Competition


 In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess, three female secondary school students have emerged as the top winners in the 2024 Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Energy Essay Competition. The competition, which drew over 500 participants from across Nigeria, aimed to promote awareness and understanding of the electricity industry and its regulations among secondary school students.


Faith Ayomide Ogundola, a student of Ekiti State University International College, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, took home the first prize, winning a cash award of ₦500,000, an award certificate, and a plaque. Her outstanding performance was recognized by NERC, which commended her for her excellent essay writing skills.


 Sumayya Ismail Abubakar from NAK Academy, Funtua, Katsina State, secured the second position, receiving a cash award of ₦300,000, along with a certificate and plaque. Her essay demonstrated a deep understanding of the topic, impressing the judges and earning her a spot among the top winners.


Vanju Rejoice John, from Government Day Senior Secondary School Bekaji, Adamawa State, took the third position, receiving a cash award of ₦200,000. However, her impressive presentation skills caught the attention of NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, who awarded her an additional ₦100,000.


NERC in three successive posts on X said, “1st Place Winner: Congratulations to Miss Faith Ayomide Ogundola for securing 1st place in the 2024 NERC Energy Essay Competition for SS2 students!



“Miss Ogundola, from Ekiti State University International College, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, received an award certificate, a plaque, and a cheque for ₦500,000 for her outstanding performance. “2nd Place Winner: Congratulations to Miss Sumayya Ismail Abubakar for securing 2nd place in the 2024 NERC Energy Essay Competition for SS2 students!



“Miss Abubakar, from NAK Academy Funtua, Katsina State, received an award certificate, a plaque, and a cheque for ₦300,000 for her remarkable performance. “3rd Place Winner: Congratulations to Miss Vanju Rejoice John for securing 3rd place in the 2024 NERC Energy Essay Competition for SS2 students! “Miss John, from Government Day Senior Secondary School Bekaji, Adamawa State, received an award certificate, a plaque, and a cheque for ₦200,000 for her impressive performance. “She was also awarded an extra ₦100,000 by NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, who was impressed by her eloquence during the presentations.”


The competition focused on the topic "How does the New Customer Protection Regulation (CPR 2023) Protect the Rights & Obligations of Electricity Customers?" and was marked by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The winners demonstrated a thorough understanding of the topic, showcasing their critical thinking and essay writing skills.
