Tragedy as Train Crushes 50-Year-Old Man in Lagos

A fatal train accident in the Oshodi area of Lagos on Saturday claimed the life of a 50-year-old man, identified as Emmanuel, leaving the community in shock. The incident occurred near the Arena Shopping Mall, a bustling area of Oshodi, known for its heavy foot traffic and commercial activities.

Report indicates that the tragedy came to light when Emmanuel’s sister, whose name has not yet been released, received a distressing phone call around 9 a.m., informing her that her brother had been struck by an oncoming train. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, with the train having fatally wounded Emmanuel before coming to a stop.

The Lagos State Police Command swiftly responded to the incident after the Mosafejo Division was notified at approximately 1:33 p.m. A statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that a team of detectives was immediately dispatched to the site to carry out preliminary investigations.

“The scene was visited and photographed by a team of detectives,” Hundeyin said. “The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy.” The police also reported that the body was moved under strict safety protocols, and an autopsy will be conducted to officially determine the cause of death. As investigations continue, the case has now been transferred to the Railway Police Command in Ebute Metta for further inquiry.

The exact circumstances leading to the tragic accident are still unclear. Preliminary reports have yet to confirm whether Emmanuel was attempting to cross the tracks, distracted, or possibly unaware of the approaching train. These are some of the key issues detectives are probing as they work to gather more information from potential witnesses and nearby surveillance footage.

Sadly, this is not the first incident of its kind in Lagos, where railway tracks run through densely populated areas. In a similar accident recorded in August, a man was killed by a moving train in the Mushin area of Lagos. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. near the Cappa railway tracks, when the victim, a male adult, was struck while walking along the tracks. He sustained severe injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

In a statement released after the Mushin accident, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), through its spokesperson Nosa Okunbor, confirmed that the victim died instantly from the impact of the collision. The agency’s responders were on site to secure the area and ensure that the body was handled with care.

This recent fatality in Oshodi has reignited calls for increased safety measures around railway tracks in Lagos, particularly in areas where pedestrian crossings are poorly regulated. Community leaders and safety advocates have repeatedly urged the government to improve fencing along railway lines, install more warning signs, and implement stricter enforcement of rail safety regulations to prevent further accidents.

The investigation into Emmanuel’s death is ongoing, and authorities have urged any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward. Local residents have expressed their condolences to the victim’s family, and many have emphasized the need for greater public awareness about the dangers of railway crossings.

As Lagos continues to expand and modernize its transportation network, balancing the needs of a rapidly growing population with safety precautions remains a

pressing challenge.
