Transport Ministry Hands Over $3bn PH - Aba Railway To NRC

The Federal Ministry of Transport has handed over the development of the Port Harcourt-Aba railway line to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) for implementation. This is a significant step in the modernisation of Nigerian railways. The 62-kilometre railway project, valued at US$3.02 billion and expected to be completed by May 2024, is part of the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri Eastern Narrow Gauge Railway Plan, which aims to revitalise the country’s transport infrastructure.

The Director of the Department of Transport, Mr. Ayo Dada, handed over the railway assets to the NRC at a meeting held in Port Harcourt on Thursday. Speaking at the event, Dada said the completion of the railway would improve passenger transport between Rivers State and Abia State and boost the economies of the two regions. He outlined the main details of the project, which include the repair and reconstruction of the 62.8-square-metre railway, upgrading the 62.8-square-metre main railway, addition of new lines and alterations to various stations.

These stations include Port Harcourt, Elelenwo, Obuzor, Umugo and Aba. Railway infrastructure. Dada confirmed that the focus at present was on the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri phase of the project, which is still important. He noted that the contractor had provided the specification and supervision for the completion of the Port Harcourt to Aba section and that the government was committed to completing the entire railway. This development is seen as an important part of Nigeria’s long-term strategy for economic growth and national prosperity. Complete and complete.

Iloanyusi, represented by the Civilian Counsel of the NRC, Adesegun Ogunade, spoke of the direct benefits of the railway to Nigerians, especially the provision of affordable transport options.

The Port Harcourt to Aba train service is now operational and passengers have reported significant improvements in ease of travel, speed and affordability. The problems caused by the high cost of transport are making it easier for people in the region to travel. The NRC also assured the public that adequate security measures are being put in place to ensure the safety of passengers and the railways.

Local police teams have been deployed to provide additional security and the government is working with the Ministry of Transport to provide additional security measures to improve operations, improve connectivity and provide Nigerians with efficient and affordable transport options. While the government continues to focus on the expansion and modernization of the railway, the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri section remains a priority and is scheduled to be completed in the near future.
