The Nigeria Police Force have dispersed #FearlessInOctober protesters gathered at the Utako Market in Abuja. The protesters had gathered at the market as early as 7 am on Tuesday, October 1 at the busy Utako market to deliberate on the day’s proceedings before they commence the organised protest, when they were met with teargas fumes from the police.
Damilare Adenola, director of mobilisation of Take It Back Movement, explained to journalists that the protesters will regroup and continue the demonstration. The October 1 protest was organised by a group of Nigerian Youths against the hardship faced by Nigerians occasioned by government policies and programmes. It was learnt that the Police officers promptly dispersed the protesters at about 8:54 am.
The Protest according to the organisers is a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance protests held between August 1 and 10 in response to the economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians. The Nigerian Security operatives mounted several roadblocks on roads leading to Eagle Square in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday. Commuters and transporters faced difficulties accessing the area due to the roadblocks.
At the time of filling this report, our correspondent gathered that at the Eagle Square, there were heavy presence of security operatives both inside and outside the facility. The deployment of security officials around Eagle Square was targeted at dissuading the #fearlessinoctober protesters from using the venue, despite it not being used for the Independence Day celebration.
Recall that during the protest held between August 1 and 10, security operatives resisted attempts to use the facility.
