Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, declared Thursday that she will be a president who “unites” Americans, while condemning Donald Trump for attempting to “return our country to the past.”
During her speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the US vice president asserted that she would be a more powerful advocate for the middle class than Republican Trump, advocate for reducing gun violence, and contribute to the reform of our broken immigration system to lessen undocumented border crossings.
“I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations, a president who leads and listens — who is realistic, practical and has common sense and always fights for the American people,” Harris told cheering supporters.
“The future is always worth fighting for. And that’s the fight we are in right now. A fight for America’s future.”
Harris, 59, spoke to the crowd about her plan to bring together labor, small business owners, and American companies to create jobs and to strive to enhance America's economy and lower the cost of everyday necessities like health care, housing, and groceries.
She also vowed to create an “opportunity economy” for all to compete and succeed, “whether you live in a rural area, small town or big city.”
“Building that middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency,” she said.
Harris has been criticised by Trump’s campaign for failing to clearly lay out a series of policy positions in the month since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed his deputy.
She attacked Trump’s domestic agenda, asserting that he doesn’t stand up for the middle class or everyday Americans. “Instead, he fights for himself and his billionaire friends, and he will give them another round of tax breaks.”
''Donald Trump fights for billionaires and large corporations,'' she said. ''I will fight to give money back to working and middle-class American.''
Harris cautioned against the radical government blueprint known as ‘Project 2025,’ which was created by a think tank and advocated for a hard-right agenda.
“Its sum total is to pull our country back to the past,” she said.
With elections rapidly approaching, Harris is trying to distance herself from unpopular Biden Policies, while getting ahead of Trump's move to label her a liberal extremist.
