Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has opened up about the challenges and rewards of adjusting to life under new manager Arne Slot, following the departure of long-time boss Jürgen Klopp.
Slot, 46, took over the reins this summer after Klopp stepped away for a sabbatical, leaving a significant leadership void at the club. Despite the transition, Liverpool has begun the season in strong form, sitting at the top of the Premier League standings.
Van Dijk, 33, acknowledged the difficulties of adapting to a new managerial style but praised Slot for his fresh approach. "It's never easy when you lose a manager like Klopp," Van Dijk shared. "But Arne Slot has brought a new energy to the squad. He tackles things in his own way, and where I can assist him, I will."
Slot inherits a team that was already on the brink of greatness, with Liverpool finishing last season just behind Arsenal and Manchester City in a tightly contested title race. Van Dijk noted, "Slot is managing a very strong squad, and it's important to remember that we were right in the mix for the title last season until the final few matches. He’s a very talented coach, and we’re lucky to have him."
The captain also discussed the subtle but important tactical changes under Slot’s leadership. "With a new coach, there are always slight adjustments to the way we play. This isn't just about me but about the entire team. I enjoy having a prominent role in these changes, and it’s clear the coach values that as well," Van Dijk explained to *Voetbal International*.
Van Dijk, who has always been a key figure in Liverpool’s defensive line, now finds himself with added responsibility in dictating play from the back. "I’m in a position where I can see how the opposition is pressing—whether they have one or three strikers, and how their full-backs are positioned. There’s always a different challenge each time," he said. "Since day one, I've had in-depth discussions with the coach, using video analysis to fine-tune our tactics. The development has been great, and I’m really enjoying the process."
Alongside Ibrahima Konaté, Van Dijk feels he has a clear understanding of his role in both defense and attack. "Together, we have a good sense of what’s happening on the pitch, especially when I have the ball. Every match brings new situations. Am I being blocked by a striker? Do I need to push forward into midfield? These are all factors that Slot’s system requires, and it’s working out well for us."
Despite the changes, Van Dijk’s leadership and understanding of the game continue to shine, and under Slot, Liverpool appears ready to mount another serious challenge for the Premier League title.
