We Are Committed To Job Creation Through Marine Resources - Zibs-Godwin

The government of Bayelsa State has reiterated its commitment to leveraging the state’s abundant marine resources to create sustainable jobs and enhance livelihoods, particularly for its growing youth population.

This declaration was made by the Honourable Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Mrs. Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, during a crucial meeting with the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), Bayelsa State chapter, in Yenagoa on Thursday. Dr. Zibs-Godwin, who was represented by the Officer Covering the Duties of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Wakedei Davison Ere, emphasized that the state government would continue to make bold strides toward sustainable management of its rich marine environment.

In her address, the Commissioner stressed the importance of the blue economy—an approach that integrates economic growth with environmental sustainability. "Fisheries are at the heart of this vision," she said, highlighting the critical role the sector plays in the state’s economic future. According to Dr. Zibs-Godwin, the ministry is determined to foster a blue economy that benefits all stakeholders, including the local communities who depend on fishing as a livelihood.

The meeting was part of the ongoing efforts by the ministry to engage with various stakeholders. The Commissioner pointed out that one of the recent steps taken to enhance collaboration was the extended stakeholders’ validation of the ministry’s strategic framework. This document outlines the state’s roadmap for sustainable marine resource management and development. Dr. Zibs-Godwin expressed readiness to collaborate with FISON and other relevant bodies to realize the objectives laid out in the framework.

In his remarks, the State Chairman of FISON, Dr. Eli Augustus, expressed appreciation for the ministry’s efforts and outlined key areas where collaboration could be strengthened. He noted that the society’s visit was aimed at building a closer working relationship with the ministry, with a focus on promoting sustainable fishing practices and ensuring the long-term viability of the marine sector. Dr. Augustus also praised the government for its commitment to the fisheries sector, especially in marking World Fisheries Day, an event celebrated with the airing of an informative documentary on local radio stations.

The delegation from FISON included prominent members such as Dr. Kariye E. Lelei, Vice Chairman; Phillip K. Inegite, Secretary; and Doverick T. Oginike, Ex-officio, among others. The group came together to discuss mutual interests and explore ways to jointly tackle the challenges facing the fisheries sector, while capitalizing on its potential to create employment opportunities for the state's youthful population.
