The Ikwerre people of Rivers State, led by Dr. Okachikwu Dibia, President of the Iwhnurohna Progressive Union (IPO) are taking a bold stance against Ohanaeze Ndigbo's claims that they're part of the Igbo ethnic group. They're pushing back against harassment and threats from prominent Ohanaeze Ndigbo members.
The Ikwerre people have a distinct identity that spans linguistic, historical, and cultural differences. Their native name, Iwhnurohna, reflects their ancestry from the ancient Bini Kingdom, not Igboland. In fact, historical records show that the Ikwerre people descended from Akalaka, a member of the Benin royal family who fled in the 13th century.
Dr. Dibia's message is clear: "The Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality believes in one Nigeria." They're not looking to stir up conflict but to assert their unique identity and autonomy. This development comes amid tensions between Ikwerre and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, with some even suggesting that celebrating Igbo Day in Port Harcourt disrespects the Ikwerre people murdered during the Biafran War.
Do you believe Ikwerre and Ohanaeze Ndigbo can resolve this problem?
