As more questions continue to linger if controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, actually served his Prison terms or not, Prison specialists have revealed why the media personality was separated from other convicts at the correctional facility, while disputing rumors of a VIP area.
Bishop Kayode Williams, Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, spoke on National TV on Friday to highlight the varied amenities available to offenders based on their classification. He stated, "Section. Accommodation for the Police Team."
“There are accommodations for condemned prisoners, who must not mingle with other inmates, and a second category for convicted inmates, who essentially run the prison.”
Williams stressed the necessity for particular arrangements in Bobrisky's case, adding “Given his transgender appearance, would it be appropriate to place him in the general cell?
The first thing they do is determine how to accommodate someone like him. He has been placed in protective custody due to safety concerns, as his appearance could put him at risk. He resembles a woman and may attract unwanted attention from other inmates.”
Concerning Bobrisky's position, Williams underlined the need for particular arrangements.
Francis Enobore, former National PRO of the Nigerian Correctional agency, echoed Williams' comments, explaining that the agency profiles each convict to protect their safety and the prison's security.
“Although he admitted in court that he is a man, he presents as a woman. Many inmates are unrepentant homosexuals, and without proper measures, there could be serious security issues,” he warned.
However, Enobore refuted claims that Bobrisky was given a private section, asserting, “There is no private apartment or special treatment in the prison.”
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky's cconfinement erupted earlier this week when Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, released a voice note in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed that after his April conviction for abusing naira notes, his godfather and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment.
Similarly, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board suspended two deputy controllers in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos due to bribery allegations involving Bobrisky's private apartment.Ensure the prison's security.
The suspension of the officials was disclosed in a statement signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, the secretary to Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), on Thursday, September 26th, 2024.
